An English Lesson about Outdoor Places

Well, hello and welcome to this English lesson about outdoor places.

The first outdoor place I want to help you learn about is called a campground.

我想教大家的第一个户外场所叫做营地。

If you look across the river behind me, you will see a campground.

A, campground is a place where you go to set up a tent or where you bring your trailer to spend some time living in the great outdoors.

Maybe you'll go for a weekend, Maybe you'll go for a week or two.

In the summer, you'll go to a campground to experience living in the great outdoors.

And here are the things that you would do at a campground.

You would go there to camp.

You might go there to hike.

You might go there to fish.

So a campground is a place where you go to live in a tent or to live in a trailer to spend some time in the great outdoors.

Right now, I think we should go to the next outdoor place.

This is a pier.

A pier is a walkway that goes out into a body of water.

This pier is rather large, and it's made out of concrete.

But a pier can also be made out of wood.

When you come to a pier, there's a few things that you can do.

You can come here to stroll.

You can come here to walk.

You might even come here to dock your boat.

So this is a pier, a walkway that goes out into a body of water.

A, skate park is a place where you can go skateboarding.

A place where you can bring your inline skates and go skating.

I'm not super familiar with what to do at a skate park, but I certainly know what a skate park looks like.

A skate park is usually in a town or city, and it's built by the town or city so that teenagers and kids have something to do.

Apparently, if teenagers and kids don't have something to do, maybe they get up to no good.

So a skate park, a place where you can bring your Skateboard, hopefully you're wearing a helmet and elbow pads and knee pads so that you have protection.

And you can go skateboarding.

Or if you have inline skates, you can put them on and you can do tricks here with them as well.

A forest is a place with a lot of trees and plants.

Sometimes we call it a wooded area, meaning that there's lots of trees and there's usually some wild animals, and there's definitely lots of insects.

You might even see some today.

There's something you won't see very often in a forest, though.

You usually don't see very many people.

But if you do go to a forest, and if the law allows, if it's allowed, you might go to the forest to hike, you might go to the forest to camp, or you might go to the forest to hunt.

So the forest is a wooded area, a place with lots of plants and definitely lots of trees.

A vineyard is a place where grapes are grown.

Sometimes the grapes are for eating, and sometimes the grapes are used to make wine.

The farmer who runs the vineyard does really two things.

I guess originally they would plant the grapes, and then they also harvest the grapes.

A vineyard is a beautiful place to visit.

There are many vineyards in my area, and I always enjoy driving past them.

So a vineyard is a place where they grow grapes.

This is a boardwalk, and you might have guessed why it's called a boardwalk.

A boardwalk leads to water, or more commonly, goes along the water, along a river or a lake or another body of water.

A beach is a sandy area, sometimes a rocky area along a lake, a sea or an ocean.

The beach is a great place to come to, to see the sunrise or to see the sunset.

It's a great place to come on the weekend or to come during the week whenever you want to hear the sound of the waves.

The types of things that people do at the beach.

People come to the beach to suntan, if you're into that sort of thing.

People come to the beach to play beach volleyball or to play frisbee It's a place to relax.

So this is a beach.

This is a band shell.

A band shell or bandstand is a place where you can come to see outdoor performances or to see outdoor concerts.

It's kind of like a stage, but it's built outside.

Sometimes it's nice to see concerts inside, but in the summer, it's nice to come and see them outdoors.

When you come to a bandstand or bandshell, you come here to listen to music.

You might come here to see a performance, or you might come here to see your favorite band.

So there's no outdoor market here today.

And by the way, if an outdoor market is mostly farmers, we call it a farmer's market.

There isn't one today, but this is where we come to sell our flowers in the summer.

And so I'll find some footage from last summer to show you.

An outdoor market or farmer's market is obviously a place where vendors can set up their booth or stall and where customers can come and enjoy the beautiful, clear, fresh outdoor air while they shop for the things they need.

So an outdoor market is simply a place to buy things but it happens to be outside the area you see behind me now is called a pasture.

A pasture is a large grassy area where a farmer will put their animals to graze.

我身后看到的区域叫做牧场。

So if you have sheep or goats or cows or horses, you might put them in your pasture so that they can eat grass.

And when cows eat grass and when animals eat grass, we call this grazing.

So this large area behind me is called a pasture.

It's a place where you put farm animals so that they can graze.

Behind me, you can see a, field.

A field is a large open area where a farmer will grow crops.

The crop in this field is winter wheat.

It's early spring here in Ontario, Canada, and that's the crop that is currently growing.

All of the other fields still need to be planted.

There are three things a farmer will do in their field field.

They will plant crops.

Jen and I don't come to playgrounds very often anymore because our kids are getting a lot older.

When you go to the playground, you might go on the slide, you might go on a swing, you might go on the teeter totters.

So this is a playground, a place where kids come to play.

You can come to the park to have a picnic.

So this is a park, a large public area with trees and grass and paths and picnic tables and benches.

It's a great place to come when you want to relax.

This is a sports field.

A sports field is a large grassy area where you can play outdoor sports.

I say grassy, but this one also has quite a few dandelions.

They're white now, but a week ago they were all yellow.

I thought it was quite beautiful.

The types of things you would do on a sports field, you might come here to play soccer, or in your country, you might come here to play football.

You might also come here to play other outdoor sports, like American football or American rules football.

So this is a sports field.

It's a large outdoor grassy area where you can come to play sports.

A hiking trail or what we also call a hiking path is simply a trail or path that goes through nature.

If you want to enjoy the outdoors and you want it to be easy to walk, you would find a hiking trail or hiking path.

And there's really only two things you can do.

You can come here to hike, you can use a hiking trail to hike, or you can use a hiking trail to walk your dog.

So this is a hiking trail.

It is a beautiful trail or path that goes through nature.

An orchard is a place where you will find fruit trees.

When you come to an orchard, you sometimes see blossoms early in the season, and later you will see fruit like apples and pears and peaches.

So there are three things that a farmer can do in an orchard.

You might come here to eat your lunch if you're on a lunch break.

That's kind of a strange thing, but, people do do that.

A backyard is a private grassy area behind a house.

It's the opposite of a front yard, which is a grassy area in front of the house.

It's your own little piece of the outdoors that you don't have to share with anyone else.

Usually you'll find a picnic area in a forest or in a park, and it's a place that either has large trees or in this case, a pavilion.

This picnic area hasn't been here for very long, so the trees aren't very big yet.

This is a band shell.

We sometimes call it a bandstand.

A band shell or bandstand is a place where you can come to see outdoor performances or to see outdoor concerts.

It's kind of like a stage, but it's built outside.

Sometimes it's nice to see concerts inside, but in the summer, it's nice to come and see them outdoors.

When you come to a bandstand or bandshell, you come here to listen to music.

You might come here to see a performance, or you might come here to see your favorite band.

So this is a bandstand or bandshell.

It's a place you come to see an outdoor performance and to listen to some music.

So there's no outdoor market here today.

And by the way, if an outdoor market is mostly farmers, we call it a farmer's market.

There isn't one today, but this is where we come to sell our flowers in the summer.

And so I'll find some footage from last summer to show you.

An outdoor market or farmer's market is obviously a place where vendors can set up their booth or stall and where customers can come and enjoy the beautiful, clear, fresh outdoor air while they shop for the things they need.

So an outdoor market is simply a place to buy things but it happens to be outside the area you see behind me now is called a pasture.

A pasture is a large grassy area where a farmer will put their animals to graze.

So if you have sheep or goats or cows or horses, you might put them in your pasture so that they can eat grass.

And when cows eat grass and when animals eat grass, we call this grazing.

So this large area behind me is called a pasture.

It's a place where you put farm animals so that they can graze.

Behind me, you can see a, field.

A field is a large open area where a farmer will grow crops.

The crop in this field is winter wheat.

It's early spring here in Ontario, Canada, and that's the crop that is currently growing.

All of the other fields still need to be planted.

There are three things a farmer will do in their field field.

They will plant crops.

They will grow crops.

And they will harvest crops.

So this is a field.

It's a large open area where a farmer will grow crops.

This is a playground.

A playground is a place where kids come to play.

Jen and I don't come to playgrounds very often anymore because our kids are getting a lot older.

But this is a playground, a place where kids would come to play.

When you go to the playground, you might go on the slide, you might go on a swing, you might go on the teeter totters.

And all of those things are lots of fun for kids.

So this is a playground, a place where kids come to play.

This is a park.

A park is a large public area with grass, trees, and paths.

A park is a great place to come to when you have a day off.

When you go to the park, you can lay on a blanket and read a book.

You can come to the park to have a picnic.

You can come to the park to relax.

So this is a park, a large public area with trees and grass and paths and picnic tables and benches.

It's a great place to come when you want to relax.

This is a sports field.

A sports field is a large grassy area where you can play outdoor sports.

I say grassy, but this one also has quite a few dandelions.

They're white now, but a week ago they were all yellow.

I thought it was quite beautiful.

The types of things you would do on a sports field, you might come here to play soccer, or in your country, you might come here to play football.

You might also come here to play other outdoor sports, like American football or American rules football.

So this is a sports field.

It's a large outdoor grassy area where you can come to play sports.

A hiking trail or what we also call a hiking path is simply a trail or path that goes through nature.

If you want to enjoy the outdoors and you want it to be easy to walk, you would find a hiking trail or hiking path.

And there's really only two things you can do.

You can come here to hike, you can use a hiking trail to hike, or you can use a hiking trail to walk your dog.

So this is a hiking trail.

This is a hiking path.

It is a beautiful trail or path that goes through nature.

An orchard is a place where you will find fruit trees.

It is a place where a farmer will grow fruit.

When you come to an orchard, you sometimes see blossoms early in the season, and later you will see fruit like apples and pears and peaches.

At least that's what they grow in our area.

So there are three things that a farmer can do in an orchard.

They can grow fruit, they can pick fruit.

And sometimes we use the verb to harvest.

They can go to the orchard to harvest fruit.

So an orchard is a place where a farmer grows fruit.

This is the town square in my local town.

A town square is an area where you're not allowed to drive your car.

It's only for pedestrians.

You're only allowed to walk in a town square, at least in most towns and cities.

The town square is usually near the center of town or right in the center of town.

And it's a great place to come to do a few things.

You might come here to eat your lunch if you're on a lunch break.

You might come here to people watch, if you like watching people.

That's kind of a strange thing, but, people do do that.

Or you might simply come here to sit and read a book or to sit and relax.

So a town square, a place in the center of town or near the center of town where cars are not allowed.

I know there's cars going by on the street, but they're not allowed right here, where you're only allowed to walk and sit and enjoy yourself.

A backyard is a private grassy area behind a house.

It's the opposite of a front yard, which is a grassy area in front of the house.

But it's not as private.

A backyard is a really nice place to relax.

It's your own little piece of the outdoors that you don't have to share with anyone else.

You might have a small shed.

You might have a patio.

You might have some patio chairs or some lawn chairs.

And you might just sit out there on a nice day to enjoy yourself.

So a backyard, a nice, private grassy area that's your own little piece of the outdoors.

A picnic area is a place where you can have a picnic.

Usually you'll find a picnic area in a forest or in a park, and it's a place that either has large trees or in this case, a pavilion.

This picnic area hasn't been here for very long, so the trees aren't very big yet.

But a picnic area is a place with large trees or a pavilion or other places where you can sit.

You can even put a blanket on the grass and have a picnic there.

It's a really nice place to come in the summer to enjoy time with family and to have a picnic.

A garden is a place where people grow plants.

They grow things like flowers or vegetables.

Jen has several flower gardens because she grows lots of flowers for our local market.

Although when someone says garden, I usually think of vegetable garden.

A place where someone might grow carrots or beans or tomatoes.

A, garden is a great place to experience being outside.

In fact, they say working in the soil and growing plants is really good for your body because it makes you stronger, but it's also good for your mind because it's relaxing.

So, a garden is a large outdoor area where people grow things like flowers or mostly, I think they grow vegetables well, hey, thank you so much for watching this English lesson about outdoor places.
